TECH CORNER
Privacy, Technology, and Fair Housing
What would you do if you discovered that your application for a mortgage or a rental unit was rejected— and that the denial was due to discrimination? You could, if motivated, appeal the decision with the bank or landlord, file a complaint with your local fair housing center, or hire an attorney to seek a remedy through the legal system. Eventually, though, such efforts would come down to whether or not you could prove that you were denied housing, credit, or a housing-related service because of a protected aspect of your identity such as race or gender.
Increasingly, however, there is not a person making that decision, but an algorithm. These algorithms are built on troves of data to train them to make certain predictions independently, such as whether someone is likely to miss a mortgage or rental payment. The problem with this approach is that there are no consistent, concrete, accountable, or agreed-upon standards.

YOU make all the difference. We are at a pivotal time in history where we can move forward together and impact business as usual, or we can sit idle while disrespect, inequality and tyranny run rampant. Black homeownership gives us a voice. Black homeownership gives us stability and generational wealth. Black homeownership matters. Come join one (or more) of the Black Realtist of Southern Nevada committees and bring positive change to Nevada. Lift every voice and sing loudly...

Fair Housing Month
Fair Housing:
The ‘Act’ in Action.
This year, we commemorate the 56th anniversary of the passage of the Fair Housing Act, the landmark civil rights law signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson on April 11, 1968, that made discrimination in housing transactions unlawful. The Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in housing because of race, color national origin, religion, sex (including gender identity and sexual orientation), disability, and familial status. This year’s Fair Housing Month theme is “Fair Housing: The ‘Act’ in Action.”
